OTTUMWA-Emmett E. “Chill” Van Veen, 86, of Ottumwa, died at 12:55 a.m. December 26, 2016 at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City.
He was born May 18, 1930 in Marion County, IA to Claus “Charlie” and Nolah Lark Van Veen. He married Oma Wood and they later divorced. He married Jan Wood on February 22, 1963 and she preceded him in death on December 26, 2012.
Emmett farmed in Wapello County and worked for John Morrell & Co. for 22 years in Ottumwa and for 14 years in Sioux Falls, SD, retiring in 1988. He worked for 5 years for APEX Medical Corp. in Sioux Falls before returning to Ottumwa in 1993. Emmett was still working part-time at the BP gas station at the corner of Jefferson and Pennsylvania at the time of his death.
Emmett was a Boy Scout Master for 20 years and also served as Unit Commissioner in Boy Scouts for over 20 years.
Surviving are six sons, Emmett Van Veen Jr. of Ottumwa, John Van Veen of Oskaloosa, Bruce (Bridget) Van Veen and Brian Van Veen both of Ottumwa, Andy Van Veen (Bridgett) of Sioux Falls, SD and Warren (Kindra) Van Veen of Carroll; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Sandra Kay Fluaitt of Iowa City; a half-sister, Charlene Koonce of Seminole, FL; two step-sisters, Sandra Boatright of Waterloo and Geraldine Case of Liberty, KY.
He was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother, Dorothy Van Veen; an infant brother, Denzil Van Veen; two step-brothers, Andy Emanuel and Rex Stewart.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home with Glen Cochran officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery.
Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Friday with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday.
