OTTUMWA – Mickey Dean Smith, 68, of 126 Lynwood Ave. died 11:35 a.m. December 30, 2016 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
He was born March 14, 1948 in Des Moines to Robert Louis and Charla Josie Landon Smith. He married Carol Jean Lewis on June 12, 1982.
A 1966 graduate of East High School in Des Moines, Mickey was an alumni of Grandview College. He had worked for the Iowa Commission for the Blind. In 1987, he moved to Baltimore, MD where he worked for the headquarters of the National Federation of the Blind. He continued working there until moving to Ottumwa in 2002.
He was a member of the Sierra Club of Iowa and the Square Dancing Club of Polk County.
Surviving is his wife, Carol; a sister, Melody Rose (William) Probasco; two brothers, Roy Rex (Ginny) Smith and Phillip Eugene Smith; two step-sisters; 9 step-brothers; 6 nieces; a nephew, numerous aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Brian Kent Smith and step-father, Melvin Overton.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Mel Kendall officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
The family will be present one hour prior to the service.
Memorials may be made to the family or the National Federation of the Blind.
