Obituaries: Mike Cathey

OTTUMWA – Dallas Michael Cathey, 69, of Ankeny and formerly of Ottumwa, died at 2:47 a.m. January 2, 2017 at Taylor  House Hospice in Des Moines.

Mike was born on October 27, 1947 in Ottumwa, IA to Dallas and Marjorie Ruplinger Cathey. He grew up and attended school in Hedrick, IA. Mike married Argena Hutton on June 14, 1969, whom he had known since Kindergarten but only started dating when they both went to college at Northeast Missouri State in Kirksville.

Mike worked for Plumb Supply Company from 1973 until 2014, retiring as Branch Manager of the Ottumwa location. After retirement he relocated from Ottumwa to Ankeny where his oldest daughter resides.

Mike was a member of St. Mary of the Visitation in Ottumwa.

Mike had many hobbies and interests which included RC car racing, stained glass, fresh water aquariums and most notably competing at the Iowa State Fair with pickles and relishes where he won many honors including Best of Show and Sweepstakes ribbons. Because of his many wins, he was featured in the Des Moines Register and interviewed on the PBS Iowa State Fair highlights show. Mike also loved animals and had Siamese cats and several dogs throughout his adult life.

Mike loved his wife and daughters unconditionally and provided them with a wonderful life. He always noticed a new hairstyle, a new outfit or new shoes and complimented them. His favorite thing to say was, “It’s hell being beautiful, isn’t it girls?”

Mike is survived by his wife, Argena Cathey of Ankeny; daughter, Kristina (Charley) Miller of Ankeny; daughter, Joanna (Chris) Fitch of Omaha, Nebraska; three grandchildren, Benjamin & Lydia Miller and Madeline Fitch; and his mother-in-law, Georgana Hutton of Ankeny.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son, Timothy Dallas Cathey.

His body has been cremated.

Graveside inurnment will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Brooks Cemetery in Hedrick.

Visitation with the family present will be 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home.
