OTTUMWA-Join the United Way of Wapello County at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, January 24th for ‘Planning Your 2017 Garden’. The class is free and open to the public and will be held at the Sieda building at 725 W. Second Street.
January is the time of year when visions of garden plots dance in our heads. Gardeners scour through seed catalogs dreaming of basking in the warm sunshine while harvesting fresh veggies for dinner.
Linda Spears, Community Gardens Coordinator with United Way of Wapello County will be moderating the class. This will be Spears’ 4th gardening season with the Community Gardens. She has gardened most of her life and has been a Master Gardener for several years.
This class will have something for everyone, from novice to experienced gardeners. Topics will range from where to locate your garden to succession gardening. Planning a garden involves more than merely putting a seed in the ground. Good planning can make a difference in how well a person enjoys their gardening experience. There will be a question and answer session at the end where gardeners help gardeners.
“We are building a network of garden enthusiasts,” said Linda Spears. “My goal is to encourage everyone who attends to put into practice one technique they have not tried before.”
Participants will leave with a good overview of planning their garden and plenty of support materials to help them put it into practice. The class is eligible for Master Gardener education hours.
