Obituaries: Thomas Murphy

Thomas Joseph Murphy, age 67, of Albia, passed away Friday evening, March 10, 2017 at the Monroe County Hospital in Albia.


Tom was born on February 15, 1950, in Albia to Michael “MT” Thomas and Evelyn (Nucko) Murphy.  He graduated from Albia High School, class of 1968.  He married Charlene Hopkins on July 27, 1968 in Albia.  They were blessed with two children, Tommy and Annie.


He started working in the Waste Water Department for the City in 1973, and was the Waste Water Superintendent until his retirement in 2012, after forty years of service.   He was also elected City Mayor in 2013.  He was a volunteer at the Albia Fire Department for thirty years, from 1974-2004.  He coached Babe Ruth baseball for many years as the Yankees manager. Tom enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting mushrooms and arrowheads, and he was an avid collector of stamps, tokens, and postcards.


Tom is survived by his wife, Charlene Murphy of Albia; children, Tommy (Christina) Murphy of Burlington, Annie (John) Prescott of Albia; mother, Evelyn Murphy of Albia; grandchildren, Katie Murphy, Zachary Sulentich, Kelsey Sulentich, Emily Prescott, Jonathan Prescott; step grandchildren, Jacob Staats, Austin Hartley, Dustin Hartley; step great grandchildren, Haleigh Staats, Jessup Staats, Ever Terryn-Lee Staats; brother, Bill (Judy) Murphy of Albia; beloved pets, Lily and Snickers, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.   He was preceded in death by his father, Michael “MT” Thomas Murphy, and brother, Michael (Mick) Murphy.


Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at Sinnott Funeral Home in Albia with Rev. Richard Grimes officiating.  Burial will follow services in Oak View Cemetery in Albia.   Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 14, 2017, opening to the public at 1:00 p.m., and Tom’s family will be present from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday evening at Sinnott Funeral Home in Albia.  Memorials may be directed to the Welcome Home Soldier Monument or the Albia Fire Department.  Online condolences may be left for the family at  Arrangements entrusted with Sinnott Funeral Homes.
