OTTUMWA – Richard L. Olson, 69, of Ottumwa died at 10:25 p.m. March 17, 2017 at Pella Regional Health Center in Pella.
He was born March 27, 1947 in Algona to Jay Richard and Yvonne Faith Punke Olson.
A graduate of Ottumwa High School in 1965, he served in the U.S. Army in the Vietnam War. He worked for Rock Island Railroad, Barkers Construction, Everco Industries and for the United States Postal Service retiring in 2011.
He enjoyed building and showing street rods.
Surviving is his companion of 32 years, Martha Dietz; a son, Jeffery Olson of Ottumwa; 4 step- children, Skip Poncy of Ottumwa, Troy Poncy of Oskaloosa, Hilary (Aaron) Hurley of Ottumwa and Shawn Westfall of Ottumwa; 9 grandchildren, Kendra (Zach) Schoonover of Centerville, Booke Olson of Mt. Pleasant, Nicki (Jake) McDowell of Ottumwa, Zachary Olson of Ottumwa, Jesse Olson of Ottumwa, Ryne Denniston of Ottumwa, Reece Denniston of Ottumwa, Annie Jones of Des Moines and Whitney Poncy of Ankeny; 4 great -grandchildren, Baylie and Braxtyn Schoonover, Johnny and Aryanne Westfall; a brother, Robert J. (Julie) Olson of Agency; 3 sisters, Nina Olson of Ottumwa, Jane (David) Fite of Agency and Diane Olson of Kansas City, KS; along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Jackie Patton.
Graveside services and burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Shaul Cemetery with Chaplain Doug McAntire officiating. Military services will be conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.
