Singers and Actors Sought for Summer Performing Arts Festival

OTTUMWA-The American Gothic Performing Arts Festival announces open auditions for its upcoming productions of Little Shop of Horrors, Carousel – A Concert and Jack and the Beanstalk.
Auditions will be held on the campus of Indian Hills Community College, Arts and Sciences Building, room M118 on Sunday, April 2 beginning at 2 p.m. on a first come, first served basis with registration beginning at 1:45 p.m., and on Monday, April 3 beginning at 7 p.m. with registration beginning at 5:45 p.m.
Little Shop of Horrors is a deviously delicious Broadway and Hollywood sci-fi smash musical, devouring the hearts of theater goers for over 30 years. Howard Ashman and Alan Menken of Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin, are the creative geniuses behind what has become one of the most popular shows in the world.
“This tongue-in-cheek comedy is a world-wide favorite and we are eager to tackle it,” says Dennis Willhoit, president of AGPAF. “it will be really cute in the intimate space of the McHaffey Opera House.”
Carousel – A Concert will continue the festival’s tradition of presenting a full-length musical in concert. The festival will again collaborate with the members of the Ottumwa Area Community Chorus. “Our concert version, will focus on storytelling, dancing and the music. Costumes and set will all be minimal with a very large orchestra on stage with the singers,” says Willhoit.
Finally, Jack and the Beanstalk is an operatic adaptation. This will be the fourth year that the festival takes a children’s opera on tour to local day school programs, care centers and other community centers. This adaption features the music of Gilbert and Sullivan.

Principal and ensembles roles, singing and non-singing, are available for males and females ages 16-70. Singers/actors are encouraged to bring two 16-bar vocal selections of differing styles and a 1-2 minute monologue, but it is not a requirement. Those auditioning may also simply show up and a vocal selection and a reading will be provided. An accompanist will also be provided.
