OTTUMWA-James H. Hayes, 84, formerly of Valley Village Trailer Court, died at 4:58 p.m. May 3, 2017 at Ridgewood Specialty Care in Ottumwa where he had resided for the past 4 years.
The son of Irma and Gayle Crow, he was born March 3, 1933 in Eldon. He married the love of his life, Shirley Ann McIntire on July 24, 1953 in Pacific Grove, CA. They were blessed with 2 children, Bob and Connie. She preceded him in death on December 21, 1990 after 37 years of marriage. He later married Helen Ward on December 30, 1991 and she preceded him in death on August 8, 2005.
He served with the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955.
James attended Ottumwa High School through the 11th grade. James was employed at John Morrell & Co for 22 years until their closing in 1973. He then obtained his GED and attended Indian Hills Community College where he received his diploma in welding. In 1974 he started working for John Deere Ottumwa Works and worked there for 21 years until his retirement in 1995.
James enjoyed trap shooting and was a member of Izaak Walton for over 45 years. He enjoyed small game hunting, fishing, hunting morel mushrooms and riding his Honda Gold Wing. He was a fan of NASCAR and Dale Ernhardt and Dale Jr.
James was a member of the Willard Street United Methodist Church and for over 40 years a member of UAW Local #74.
Jim is survived by his children, Robert Hayes of New Sharon and Connie Jo (John) Rosenbalm of Ottumwa; 3 grandchildren, Thad Smith of Cedar, Ashley Smith of Ottumwa and Tory Hayes of New Sharon; 4 great-grandchildren, Madison, Eve, Wyatt and Joselyn.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery with military services conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.
Visitation begins at 10 a.m. Friday with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Heartland Humane Society or Care Initiatives Hospice.
