ALBIA-Wilbur Lee “Red” Paxton, 93, of 1415 S. B St., died at 12:05 p.m. May 4, 2017 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
He was born August 29, 1923 in Ollie, IA to John D. and Mary M. Bond Paxton. He married Virginia Peck and they later divorced. He married Janice Walker on January 20, 1965.
A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Army in Japan and the South Pacific and was awarded a Purple Heart.
He worked for John Morrell & Co. for 38 years, moving to Sioux Falls, SD in 1973 and retiring in 1985. He had been a resident of Albia since 2002.
Red was a member of the Howard Cessna Post #136 American Legion in Albia, Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars in Ottumwa and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #628 in Sioux Falls, SD. He enjoyed playing cards and watching NASCAR.
Surviving is his wife, Janice; his children, Linda (Robert “Otis”) Wallace of Ottumwa, Larry Michael (Pat) Paxton of Ankeny, Roger Paxton of Gladstone, IL and Teresa (Doug) Maddy of Albia; 4 grandchildren, Angela Crumes, Donnie Paxton, Samantha Anderson, Amber Uphoff; 16 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Gilbert (Carol) Paxton of Ottumwa and Harold (Frances) Paxton of Edina, MN and a sister, JoAnn Collier of Ottumwa.
He was preceded in death by a son, Bill Paxton; a step-son, Ricky Lee Clark; two grandchildren, Christopher Crumes and Paul R. Betzing IV; two brothers, John R. “Red” Paxton and infant Jerry K. Paxton and a sister, Eva Mae Sipe.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Neil Montz officiating.
Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery with military services conducted by Howard Cessna Post #136 American Legion.
Visitation begins at 10 a.m. Sunday with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.
