Thomas Orville Dunkin, age 75, passed away at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa, on May 5, 2017. He was born May 16, 1941, to Kenneth and Ruth Dunkin.
He married Phyllis Waters on October 2, 1959. Tom and Phyllis were blessed with three children, nine grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.
Tom enlisted in the US Army in May 1959, retiring in January 1980 as a Master Sergeant after 21 years of service. Throughout his military career, Tom, Phyllis and their children lived in numerous locations around the United States and the world; including Germany, Turkey, Ethiopia, Okinawa, and Japan; where they made many close friends. Following his military retirement, Tom and Phyllis returned home to Lovilia, Iowa, where Tom worked at Star Coal Mine and drove truck for Visser Trucking. He later worked as an owner-operator for Foodliner until his retirement in 2003.
Tom dearly loved his wife, children, grandchildren, and his schnauzer, Lacey. He was always excited to see his family walk through the door and looked forward to spending time with them. He also enjoyed fishing, boating, and working on cars and was quick to offer his mechanical skills and expertise to friends and family.
Tom was preceded in death by his grandparents, Orville and Gladys Dunkin and Tom and Mary Allison; and parents, Kenneth Dunkin, Ruth Fletcher, and stepfather Carroll Fletcher.
Tom is survived by his wife of 57 years, Phyllis Dunkin; two daughters, Tina (Randy) Beary and Lisa Shelford; one son, Tom (Petra) Dunkin; nine grandchildren, Kara (Nathan) Wilson, Meagan (Jack) Swarm, Heather (Aaron) Garrett, Leah and Jared Beary, Amanda (Travis) McKenzie, Micheal Shelford, Kevin and Bryan Dunkin; seven great grandchildren, Neva and Jude Swarm, Jesse Schultz, Madden and Melodi McKenzie, Jacob Shelford, and Lucy Garrett; and three brothers, Ken Dunkin, Tim Dunkin, and Ron Fletcher.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 11, 2017 at the Lovilia United Methodist Church with Randy Beary officiating. Tom will be cremated following services. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at the Sinnott Funeral Home, Gilbert Chapel in Lovilia, opening to the public at 1:00 p.m., and family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday evening.
