Obituaries: Ab Yochum

OTTUMWA-James S. “Ab” Yochum, 92, of Ottumwa, died at 1:15 p.m. July 16, 2017 at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City.

He was born March 31, 1925 in Ottumwa to Stevie A. and Alice Smith Yochum.  He married Patricia Ann Schoech on June 5, 1948 and she preceded him in death on January 5, 2012.

Ab was a 1942 graduate of Catholic Central High School and a World War II veteran having served in the U.S. Army.  He served with the Iowa Army Nation Guard 3654th Maintenance Company, retiring as Chief Warrant Officer in 1985.

Ab was involved in the trucking business and in 1967 he started ABS Fire Equipment.  He was with the Ottumwa Fire Department for 29 years, retiring as Captain in 1980.

Ab was a member of St. Mary of the Visitation, General Shields Council #888 Third Degree Knights of Columbus and General McMullen Assembly Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, a member of O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Surviving is a daughter, Lori (Peter) Comiskey of Grapevine, TX; a son, Steve Yochum of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren, Riley, Dylan, James, Jason, Aidan and Brendan; a half-sister, Janet Fleck of Evansville, IN and a half-brother, Paul Yochum of Cross Plains, WI.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Michelle Yochum-Guest and son-in-law, Joe Guest; two sisters, Marjorie Smith and Mary Yarkosky and a half-brother, David Yochum.

Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary of the Visitation with Father James Betzen CPPS presiding.  Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery with military services conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.

Visitation begins at 10 a.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home with the family greeting friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday. A Christian Wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday with   Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus and Ottumwa Fire Department serving as honor guards.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary of the Visitation.
