DES MOINES-The Thrills of the 2017 Iowa State Fair are set to kick off in a few short days. Special celebrations, discounts and displays will be featured throughout the Fair, including canned food donation discounts, Veterans’ Day, Older Iowan’s Day, Extreme Sunday and new this year, Heroes’ Day.
Thursday, August 10, opening day of the Iowa State Fair, Heroes’ Day celebrates EMTs, fire and rescue, policemen and paramedics. Special displays will be on Grand Avenue and the Governor’s Lifesaving Awards and Outstanding Service Awards will be presented at the Susan Knapp Amphitheater at 10 a.m. Fairgoers are encouraged to wear a shirt representing their hometown department in honor of the those who serve our communities. Heroes’ Day coincides with canned food donation day. Bring 3 cans of food for donation to the Iowa Food Bank and receive a $3 discount on adult admission.
Monday, August 14, the Iowa State Fair will honor active and retired military for Veterans’ Day. Throughout the day there will be special performances and displays as well as a parade on the Grand Concourse. The Veterans’ Day parade, an annual tradition featuring military bands, floats, the Spirit of Iowa Liberty Bell and more, will march down the Grand Concourse starting at 11 a.m. Active and retired members of the military with a military I.D. and their spouses will receive $9 gate admission from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Wednesday August 16, is Older Iowan’s Day. Fairgoers ages 60 and older, receive $9 gate admission from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check out the Older Iowan’s Day tent located on the Grand Concourse along with special programming throughout the day such as the Older Iowan’s Cookie Decorating Contest in the Elwell Family Food Center.
Sunday August 20, is Extreme Sunday. Gate Admission for the last day of the Fair is half price – $6 for adults and $3 for children ages 6 to 11 until 9 p.m.
