OTTUMWA—Fifth graders at Wilson Elementary will be making Ottumwa shine on Saturday, September 9.
Principal Jeff Hendred wants to encourage his students to “give back to the community in some way, shape or form.” With the recent holiday weekend, Hendred felt the timing was good to do a clean-up in Greater Ottumwa Park.
The student’s first opportunity will be on Saturday. A bus will transport students and other volunteers to the park at 8 a.m. After eating breakfast, participants will engage in a team-building activity, then begin clean-up efforts. After an hour, the students will regroup, debrief, do another team-building activity, and additional trash pick-up. A bus will return students to Wilson by 11:30 a.m.
Hendred also invited other groups to participate, including Boy and Girl Scouts. These groups will serve as role models to his students and assist in the effort.
There are 52 fifth graders at Wilson. Hendred hopes for a good turn out and is already planning additional opportunities for the students to give back.
