OTTUMWA-During your fall cleaning, if you see an old set of metal crutches, a cane, a folding walker or a wheelchair that you want to finally get rid of, the Indian Hills Community College Physical and Occupational Therapist Assistant Clubs will gladly take it. The PTA and OTA Clubs will be accepting donations of your mobility equipment for the Wheels for the World Organization. The official collection dates are October 10-12 at the Rural Health Education Center and Video Conference Training Center on the IHCC Ottumwa campus. However, students will accept the items any time if you can bring them to campus. They can accept used manual wheelchairs, aluminum crutches, canes and folding metal walkers.
Wheels for the World is a non-profit organization that collects used mobility devices for distribution to individuals in need of them in third world countries. Indian Hills is one of the 29 drop sites in Iowa that will collect the equipment. The equipment is then refurbished at correctional institutions, giving inmates job skills, and sent throughout the world for distribution. You can view their website and foundation at http://www.joniandfriends.org/wheels-for-the-world/
