Kenneth C. Scherer, 90, of Ottumwa, and formerly of Agency, IA passed away Sunday, October 8, 2017 at the Vista Woods Care Center in Ottumwa, IA. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at the Living Hope Bible Church in Eldon, IA with Pastor Mark Clark officiating. Burial, with military honors, will be held in the Eldon Cemetery immediately following the service. Visitation will begin at noon on Friday, October 13, 2017 at the Living Hope Bible Church with family present to greet friends from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. Memorial contributions in Kenneth’s honor may be directed to the American Cancer Society. Kenneth Charles Scherer was born March 12, 1927 in Wapello County, IA to Warren and Lela “Mongerson” Scherer. He attended rural school before entering the workforce at an early age. In 1950 Kenny joined the United States Army where he proudly served his country during the Korean War until his honorable discharge in November of 1952. Kenny was united in marriage to Viola “James” in Kirksville, MO. Together they raised a daughter, Dixie. Kenny and Viola spent several years living in Ottumwa before moving to the farm near Agency, IA where they spent the remainder of their life together. Kenny was a hard-working farmer as well as working as a paint contractor. He and Viola worked side by side on everything from the farm to the garden.
Kenny was preceded in death by his loving wife, Viola (2016); one son-in-law, Donald Locke; three sisters, Darlene, Paulene, and Donna Mae; as well as four brothers, Burl, Donald, Raymond, and Robert.
Left to share his story are his children, Dixie Locke of Davenport, IA and Rex (BuiNita) Surber of Ottumwa, IA; four grandchildren, Colette (Jason) Diotte, Timothy Locke, Renea Surber, and Dan Humble, as well as three great grandchildren and many extended family and friends.
