Obituaries: Ricky Dean Ashby

OTTUMWA-Ricky Dean Ashby, 63, of 710 Ellis, died at his home at 11:23 a.m. May 12, 2018.

Ricky was born in Sigourney on February 1, 1955. He was taken to the orphanage in Ottumwa. Leslie and Velma Carnahan took him into foster care when he was 18 months old, fell in love and he continued to live there until they passed away.

In 1993 Rick was accepted into the Home and Community Based Services program through Optimae Life Services. He has been in his own home with 24 hour staff since that time due to his special needs. Rick never had any formal schooling but attended Center of Hope /Tenco. He taught himself how to read by watching Sesame Street on TV.

Rick is survived by a foster brother, Larry Carnahan of Ottumwa. He has three foster siblings who were also raised in the home, Randy Thomas of Muscatine, Nancy Moss of Ottumwa and Greg Thomas of Mt. Pleasant.

Rick had four very  special caregivers who were also like family to him, Pam Parks, Michael Parks, Abby Johnstone and Amber Maudlin all of Ottumwa.

He was preceded in death by his foster parents, Leslie and Velma Carnahan, a foster sister Marilyn Joyce McAntire and a foster brother, Leslie J. Carnahan.

Ricky’s body has been cremated. A graveside service will be held at a later date.
