OTTUMWA-Harvey S. Grooms, 98, of Ottumwa, died at 3:22 p.m. August 8, 2018 at Hospice House in Ottumwa.
He was born December 24, 1919 in Ottumwa to Harvey and Navy Small Grooms. He married Helen Beatrice Strunk on January 31, 1947 and she preceded him in death on May 12, 2013.
A 1938 graduate of Ottumwa High School, Harvey worked as a brick layer for Grooms Construction before joining the U.S. Navy during World War II as an aircraft mechanic in the South Pacific. After the service, he returned to Ottumwa and was co-founder and President of Grooms Brothers Inc.
Harvey was instrumental in starting apprentice programs for carpenters and brick layers throughout Iowa.
He enjoyed fishing trips to Canada, woodworking in his retirement, camping, golfing and hunting. Harvey and his wife enjoyed country music shows at Lake Rathbun, wintering in Florida and dancing. He especially loved spending time with his family.
Surviving is his daughter, Cathy S. (Vern) Barker of Ottumwa; granddaughter, Amy (Jeff) Spurgeon; 2 great-grandchildren, Chloe Davis and Camdyn Crouse.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Spurgeon, Paul and Gene Grooms and sister, Eileen Cordes.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Mel Kendall officiating. Burial will be in Chisman Cemetery with military services conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.
Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Sunday with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.
