OTTUMWA-Janice Kay Cornett, 73, of 9180 163rd Ave., died at 3:53 p.m. September 12, 2018 at Hospice House in Ottumwa.
She was born March 22, 1945 in Ottumwa to William H. “Billy” and Martha M. Cary Ott. Jan was raised in a loving family with 3 brothers and 4 sisters. She attended St. Patrick’s Elementary School, Walsh High School, and universities in Iowa City, Denver, CO, Portland, OR and Yavapai College in Prescott, AZ.
Jan was employed by the Federal Government for more than 20 years. She obtained an AAS, Nursing in Ottumwa in 1992, after which she worked as a RN for the VA, Vista Woods Care Center, Good Samaritan Society-Ottumwa and Ridgewood Nursing and Rehab Center. She also taught ancillary courses in nursing for Indian Hills Community College for more than 20 years.
Jan met and married Chet Cornett in 1982. Together they raised Christina who has given them 2 beloved grandchildren, Mariah and Trenton.
She is survived by her husband, Chet; her daughter, Christina (Gregg) Silvers of Bondurant; 2 grandchildren; 3 sisters, Pat (Danny) Rudd of Ely, IA, Cathy Ott of North Carolina, Diane (Doug) Kiene of Riverside, IA and a brother, Daniel Ott of Ottumwa.
She was preceded in death by her parents; 2 brothers, Father Richard Ott and Donald Ott; a sister, Sue Covert; her grandparents, whose grandmothers were so beloved.
Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father Patrick Hilgendorf presiding. Cremation will follow the services per Jan’s wishes.
Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Sunday at Reece Funeral Home. A Christian Wake service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home followed by family visitation until 4 p.m. Sunday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to her grandchildren’s education fund.
