OTTUMWA – David Wayne Smithart, 55, of Ottumwa died at 9:21 p.m. October 6, 2018 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
He was born February 19, 1963 in Marengo, IA to Richard Lee and Doloris Jean Denniston Smithart. He married Debra Gilliland May 4, 1991.
Growing up in Indianola, David graduated from Scavo High School in Des Moines while working on his carpenter apprenticeship. He worked as a carpenter and heavy equipment operator, working for Grooms Construction and then owning and operating D.S. Construction for many years.
David loved hunting with his dog, Radar, fishing, and watching NASCAR. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Surviving is his wife, Deb; a son, Shawn (Carrie) Smithart of Mt. Sterling, IA; 3 grandchildren, Tyler Scully (Andrew Moore), Mason Smithart and Madelyn “Maddie” Smithart; a great granddaughter, Ever-After Scully-Moore; his mother, D.J. Smithart-Carpenter of Centerville; a sister, Denise Smithart-Olson of Centerville; and several aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by his father, grandparents, aunts, uncles, 6 cousins and his dog, Radar.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Cremation will follow the visitation.
Instead of flowers, David would prefer fishing lures. Memorials may be made to the family.
