OTTUMWA – James Shepherd Heasley, 94, of Ottumwa died at 1 a.m. November 8, 2018 at Bloomfield Care Center.
He was born January 16, 1924 in Ottumwa to Arthur and Mabel Shepherd Heasley. He married Edna Riggers and she preceded him in death December 14, 2003.
A graduate of Ottumwa High School in 1942, he attended the University of Iowa and Drake University. He served with the U.S. Navy for 3 ½ years; serving in the Western Pacific.
He was a bookkeeper for Ottumwa City Lines and then worked for 30 years at John Deere Ottumwa Works as a production control supervisor. In addition, he also farmed for 31 years. He and his wife moved into Ottumwa in 1984.
Jim was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Hy-Noon Kiwanis of which he earned a lifetime membership and the OHS “40’s” Club. After moving from the farm, Jim enjoyed building and flying radio-controlled airplanes.
Surviving is his son, Allen James Heasley of Lewisville, TX; two grandchildren James Allen (Stacey) Heasley, of Bloomfield and Ann (Michael) Davidson of Fairfield; 14 great grandchildren; 14 great-great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Cynthia Heasley; along with several nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Lucille Barton and her husband, Robert Barton; a sister, Margaret Wilson and her husband, Ernest Wilson; and a brother, John Heasley.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Bill Hornback officiating. Burial will be in Ottumwa Cemetery with military services conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.
Visitation will be open after 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or the Model Airplane Club at the Ottumwa Municipal Airport.
