OTTUMWA – Keith Dale Sasseen, 78, of Ottumwa died at 11:37 p.m. December 2, 2018 at Hospice House.
He was born March 1, 1940 in Fairfield to A. Dale and Rosamond Bernice Hadley Sasseen. He married Phyllis Gould September 13, 1959 and she preceded him in death March 17, 1981. He married Barbara Fjelstul June 11, 2005.
A graduate of Richland High School in 1957, he earned his B.A. from Iowa Wesleyan in 1961, his M.A. in General Administration from Northeast Missouri State in 1966 and had attended the University of Iowa pursuing is PhD. Keith worked for his parents at Sasseen Plumbing and Heating. He was a teacher, coach and principal at Pekin Community Schools from 1961 – 1968. He then worked as an elementary principal for Keota Community Schools from 1968 – 1972. He was the Superintendent of Schools for Keota Community Schools from 1972 – 1995 and for Sigourney Community School from 1984 – 1995; serving two school districts at the same time as Joint Superintendent longer than anyone else in the nation. Keith then worked for Indian Hills Community College as Executive Vice President, retiring in 2006.
He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Richland Lodge #38 A.F. & A.M., Richland Lions Club, National Association of School Administrators, Phi Delta Kappa, the Child Advocacy Board, Ottumwa Economic Development Board and recently 100 Men on a Mission in Ottumwa.
Surviving is his wife, Barbara; two daughters, Michelle (Ron) Alm of Colorado and D’an Sasseen of West Des Moines; 3 step-children, Paul Wettestad, Lara (Cary) Justmann and Phillip (Jeri Jean) Wettestad; 6 grandchildren, Madeline Alm, Landon Alm, Alan Wettestad, Hannah Oakie, Sawyer Wettestad and Emersen Wettestad.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Richland United Methodist Church with Pastor Frosty VanVoorst officiating. Burial will be in Friends Cemetery in Richland.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. A Masonic Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Indian Hills Community College Foundation or Hospice Serving Davis and Wapello Counties.
