OTTUMWA-Thomas Michael Gowdy, 41, of Ottumwa, passed away at 1:30 a.m. January 10, 2019 at Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs.
Tom was born August 14, 1977 in Ottumwa to Michael and Cathy Ware Gowdy.
Tom was a resident of On With Life in Glenwood, IA for the past 18 years following a traumatic brain injury that resulted from a single vehicle drunk driving accident.
He attended Ottumwa High School. He worked as a mechanic at Quincy Tire in Ottumwa for 3 ½ years until his accident in October of 2000. Prior to that, he worked at John’s Tire in Ottumwa for 1 year.
Tom was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed riding four-wheelers, fishing, bow hunting and muzzle loader hunting. His special hunting buddies included his father, Michael, Jerry Coop of Blakesburg, Kermit Uhde of Ottumwa and Curt Uhde formerly of Ottumwa. He loved listening to music, attending concerts, hanging out with friends and working on cars.
Tom loved to play baseball. He played from Pee-Wee League to Babe Ruth League and was a member of the AAU travel team.
Tom is survived by his parents, Michael (Linda) Gowdy and Cathy Gowdy all of Ottumwa; sisters, Tammy (Jeff) Fisher of Oskaloosa and Susy (Michael) Riechmann of Traer; step-sister, Valerie (Kenny) Lanman of Eldon; nephew, Scott Enlow and niece, Elizabeth Denniston.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Thomas and Mary Gowdy, Clarence and Marjorie Ware and great-aunt, LaVerne Gray.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Richard Schlotter officiating. Cremation will follow the service.
Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Sunday with the family present from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
