OTTUMWA-Betty JoAnn Raper, 76, of Lenexa, KS, died on February 3, 2019 at St. Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City, MO after a lengthy battle with heart disease.
She was born October 23, 1942 in Ottumwa, IA to Gordon and Ruth Whitmore. She married Clifford “Dan” Raper on June 9, 1969.
Betty served the community in different ways throughout her life including, but not limited to, serving as a member of the school board in Ottumwa, IA; being a business owner in Denison, IA and serving as a police dispatcher at the police department in Denison, IA. In addition to her achievements and service, Betty also enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking, reading, jigsaw puzzles, sudoku puzzles, watching HGTV and spending time with her family. She was always there to listen and offer good advice.
Surviving is her husband, Dan; a sister, Nancy (Don) Pfund of Spirit Lake, IA; a son, William (Barb) Sample of Plano, TX; a son, Troy (Janna) Raper of Leawood, KS; a daughter, Carolyn (Art) Hortua of Lenexa, KS; a daughter-in-law, Lisa Sample of Denison, IA; eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, William “Bill” Sample and oldest son, Kevin Sample.
Her body has been cremated. Graveside services and inurnment will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 20, 2019 at Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Ottumwa, IA.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family to be designated as a memorial in Betty’s name at a later date.
