Obituaries: Donald Myers

Donald Myers, 91, of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away on June 10, 2019 at the Bloomfield Care Center. He was born May 21, 1928 to Harry and Sarah Greene Myers. He married Norma Stivers of March 6, 1949 in Missouri. The couple had two children, Dorothy and Karen. Norma passed away on April 19, 2007.

Don served in the U.S. Army as a labor foreman. It was his job to oversee the workers, keep records of the work performed, and to keep a roster of the prisoners. He was proud of his time served in the military and for earning the WWII Victory Medal and Army Occupation Medal. Sometime after the war, he started working at John Deere in Ottumwa. He worked various jobs in assembly for the plant until he retired after 31 years on the job.

In his spare time, Don enjoyed working with wood. He made several pieces of furniture for his grandchildren over the years. He was especially fond of the time his grandchildren spent with him in his woodworking shop. Don and Norma kept busy by volunteering their time, skills, and resources for various events. They supervised the baby contest for the Drakesville Reunion for over 25 years, volunteered for the Pulaski Corn Show and built a kitchen for the festival, ran the camper registration for the Blue Grass Festival in Drakesville and Bloomfield, and dressed up like Mr. and Mrs. Claus during Christmas time at the John Deere Union Hall.

He is survived by two daughters, Dorothy (D.G.) Stogdill of Pulaski, Iowa, Karen (Jessie Clemmons) Schafer of Drakesville, Iowa; four grandchildren, Sarah (John) Warren, Laura (Adam) Newton, Micheal (Sonya) Schafer, Brian (Natasha) Schafer; twelve great-grandchildren, Juliana, Audrey, Luella Warren, Emmitt, Tatum, Gable Newton, Tommie (Nicole Vinson) Schafer, Lacey Langford, Brandon Schafer, Katie Wiley, Dillon Jones, Christina Jones; four great-great-grandchildren, Zayden Schafer, Bentley Langford, Liam Mondabough, Brian Mondabough; brother, Richard (Dixie) Coy of Bloomfield; and two sisters, Wanatta Roemerman of Ottumwa, Mary Mincks of Knoxville, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; great-grandson, Landon Newton; two sisters, Wilma Foley, Ethel Ellison; and two brothers, Irvin Myers, Earl Coy.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 18, 2019 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield. Burial will be at the IOOF Cemetery with military rites performed by Reed-Whisler Post #78. Visitation will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Monday with the family present to greet friends from 5-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. A memorial has been established to the family.
