Obituaries: Lloyd Dean “Pa Dean” Johnston

AGENCY-Lloyd Dean “Pa Dean” Johnston, 84, of Agency died August 10, 2019 at his home.

He was born July 10, 1935 in Wapello County to Lloyd B. and Dorothy Cremer Johnston.  Dean married Ruby Monohon on August 13, 1954.

A 1953 graduate of Ottumwa High School, he served in the U.S. Army Reserves.

Dean worked for John Morrell & Co. for 19 years.  He also worked for Heinhold, Hormel, National Farmers Organization and Tenco.

His hobby was collecting hats and pens.  He loved to auctioneer, go to horse and tack sales and gardening. Dean especially loved attending his grandchildren’s activities.  He also belonged to various saddle clubs.

Surviving is his wife, Ruby; their children, Diana Long of Ottumwa, Karla (Ted) Hoover of Dalhart, TX, Randy (Teresa) Johnston of Bloomfield and Jeff (Tammy) Johnston of Blakesburg; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; his siblings, Jean Gaynor, Joyce Fairchild and Dennis Johnston and his dog, Maddie.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a great-grandson, Keenan Rockhold and his dog, Ruger.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Bill Hornback officiating.  Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery.

Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Tuesday with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Hospice Serving Davis and Wapello Counties or Agency Volunteer Fire Department.
