Obituaries: Norma Lee O’Brien

Norma Lee O’Brien, 89, of Drakesville, Iowa passed away on January 11, 2020 at her home. She was born January 9, 1931 in Davis County, Iowa to Clarence Oren and Isal Cook Forsythe. She graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1948 and married Daniel William O’Brien on January 10, 1953 in Bloomfield. Before she was married, Norma taught school at a one room school house. In 1969, she started working at the Bloomfield Care Center and then later for the Davis County Hospital as a nurse’s aide and in surgery, which she really enjoyed. She retired in 1994.

Norma loved being with her family and was very active with them in their school activities as they grew up. She was a member of the United Methodist Church for many years and was currently a member of the Word of Life Church in Bloomfield. In her free time, Norma enjoyed gardening and canning her produce, helping with the Davis County Reunion, and spending time with her family. She was a proud member of the 1948 Bloomfield High School graduating class and helped plan many reunions over the years.

She is survived by her husband; five children, Michael O’Brien of Corydon, Iowa, David (Nita) O’Brien of Drakesville, Diana (Paul) Olinger of Ottumwa, Iowa, Susan Hougland of Drakesville, Robin (Noel) Licht of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; sister, Barbara (Wayne) Cantrell of Drakesville; and two sisters-in-law, Nina Forsythe of Bloomfield, Ida Forsythe Piper of Drakesville.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two grandchildren, Katie Duffield, Angel Hougland; daughter-in-law, Pat O’Brien; son-in-law, Dwight Hougland; sister, Glennis Henderson; and two brothers, Gerald Forsythe, Trenton Forsythe.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Pastor Paul Barnes officiating. Burial will be at the Drakesville Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday with the family present to greet friends from 5-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
