OTTUMWA-Robert Wayne Mason Sr., 73, formerly of Ottumwa, died at 6 a.m. February 5, 2020 at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.
He was born September 16, 1946 in Ottumwa to Donald William and Lois Elizabeth Hornaday Mason. Robert married Sandra Reid and they later divorced.
A graduate of Ottumwa High School, he served four years in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War and then served with the Iowa Army National Guard until 1989. He was called back to serve with the Guard in 1991 during Desert Storm to operate the armory in Ottumwa. Robert operated the parts department at Ottumwa Ford for over 40 years.
He was a member of Ottumwa Masonic Lodge #16 A.F. & A.M. Robert enjoyed watching races and in his younger years he worked in pit crews and drag raced.
Surviving are his children, Yolanda (Anthony) Fischer of Ottumwa, Robert Mason Jr. of Oskaloosa and Kyle (Amanda) Mason of Ottumwa; 8 grandchildren, Lindsey, Melanie, Makenzie, Robert III, Michael, Kennedi, Konnar and Kaydence; a brother, Donald (Carol Ann) Mason of Marengo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Ann House and a brother, William “Bill” Mason.
His body has been cremated. Memorial services and Masonic services will be 3 p.m. Saturday, February 15, at Reece Funeral Home with Chaplain Doug McAntire officiating. Military services will be conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.
