OTTUMWA-James B. “Jim” Widger, 93, of Ottumwa, died at 5:02 p.m. March 20, 2020 at Great River Health – Hospice House in West Burlington.
He was born June 15, 1926 in Ottumwa to Lonnie and Jeanette Coyne Widger. He married Geraldine R. “Sis” Shepherd on November 27, 1947 and she preceded him in death on September 30, 2003.
A graduate of Ottumwa High School, James served with the US Army in Germany during WWII. He worked for Hartsog Pneumatic Tools in Ottumwa, and for Burlington Northern Railroad, retiring as conductor in 1985.
James was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and Theodore J. Martens Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1797 in Creston and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion in Ottumwa.
Surviving are his children, Janice (Dick) Daniels of Elk River, MN and Jim (Diane) Widger of Danville; 3 grandchildren, Justin Widger, Eric (Jennifer) Daniels and Danielle (Jason) Fisher; 8 great-grandchildren, Chloe, Brody, Klayton, Keigun, Kasyn, Elliot, Cora and Aria; and a sister, Donna Haines of Ottumwa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Hershel and Virgil Widger.
Private services will be held Saturday with burial in Shaul Cemetery. A time for family and friends to celebrate his life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Great River Hospice in Burlington.
