OTTUMWA – On Thursday, May 14, 2020, at approximately 9:08a.m., officers from the Ottumwa Police Department responded to a disturbance in the south alley of the 400 Block of East Main Street. It was reported to police that a male was threatening a female with a handgun at that location.
When police arrived they made contact with a female victim who was identified as Brittany Morgan McDougall, age 34, of Ottumwa, at the location.
The suspect was identified as Carlos Velasco Mendez, age 34, of 424 E. Main, Ottumwa. Mendez was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault, an Aggravated Misdemeanor. Police subsequently executed a search warrant at an apartment located at 424 E. Main Street and on a vehicle that was involved in this crime. Evidence was recovered from the both the vehicle and the apartment.
Mendez has bonded out of jail on the assault charge. This investigation is ongoing.
