OTTUMWA – On Thursday, May 14, 2020, at approximately 9:08 a.m., officers from the Ottumwa Police Department responded to a disturbance in the south alley of the 400 Block of East Main Street. It was reported to police that a male was threatening a female with a handgun at that location.
The suspect was identified as Carlos Velasco Mendez, age 34, of 424 E. Main, Ottumwa. Mendez was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault, an Aggravated Misdemeanor. Police subsequently executed a search warrant at an apartment located at 424 E. Main Street and on a vehicle that was involved in this crime.
As a result of the search warrants, police recovered controlled substances, items consistent with the distribution of drugs, and over $18,000 in cash.
On Thursday, May 21, 2020, at approximately 11:00 a.m., Ottumwa Police arrested Mendez on outstanding warrants for his arrest resulting from items located during the searches on May 14th. Mendez was charged with:
- Possession with the Intent to Deliver a Schedule 1 Controlled Substance (MDMA), a Class “C” Felony
- Possession with the Intent to Deliver less than 5 Grams of Methamphetamine, a Class “C” Felony
- Failure to Affix a Drug Tax Stamp, a Class “D” Felony
