OTTUMWA – Beginning Tuesday May 26th, 2020, South Milner Street will be shut down for reconstruction. In an effort to minimize the impact on residents, this project has been broken into two phases. Phase 1 will be from Mary Street to Wilson Street. This project will consist of new water main installation, minor storm sewer improvements, and new PCC pavement. Weather permitting Phase 1 should be completed by the end of August. Once completed, Phase 2 will commence. Phase 2 will be from Wilson Street to Burrhus Street, and will consist of new water main installation, minor storm sewer improvements, and new PCC pavement. Residents are urged to follow the marked detour route and should exercise extreme caution when navigating around the construction zone. Mail service will continue as normal. Trash and Recycling collection will be picked up either in the alley, or the nearest adjacent side street. Residents are asked to label their cans/bins with their address so that they can be returned to the proper owner. During construction, bulky item pick up will be suspended.
In late August, a separate project will begin along the east side of Milner. This project is for a multi-use trail/safe route to school from Mary Street north to Richmond Ave. This corridor has been identified as a connector route in the Ottumwa Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan to help connect the school systems and southern residential areas to the Greater Ottumwa Park system. This trail will be constructed to current design standards meeting all ADA requirements.
