Fire at Camelot Towers

OTTUMWA – On Sunday September 13, 2020 at 5:48 pm the Ottumwa Fire Department was dispatched to 827 Albia Rd. (Camelot Towers) for the report of a fire alarm. The fire department responded with all on duty personnel which is one fire engine with three firefighters from station two and one aerial fire apparatus with three firefighters from station one. On arrival heavy smoke was found to be venting from the seventh floor windows of an apartment.  A second alarm was called for which is for five additional off duty firefighters to respond. A quick, offensive fire attack as well as a primary search for victims was initiated and there were no victims located as the fire was being extinguished and the smoke ejected from the building. The fire was quickly knocked down and extinguished within ten minutes. A total of eleven firefighters were on the scene for this event.

The cause of the fire was a burner on the stovetop being left in the on position. The apartment is uninhabitable at this time and the damage is estimated at $10,000. There were no injuries to building tenants or firefighters during this call. The American Red Cross is assisting the occupant of the apartment. The Ottumwa Fire Department was assisted by the Ottumwa Police Department, Ottumwa Police Department Communications and ORMICS. The Ottumwa Fire Department would like to remind everyone to treat every fire alarm like it’s the real thing, so when it is you are prepared.
